Disability Rights Commission
The Disability Rights Commission is the authorized body which has been established under the Disability Rights Commission Act 1999 by the government to secure the rights of disabled people, protection against discrimination and promotion of equal opportunity for the disabled people. It was set up by an act of parliament to perform the various functions such as:-
- Encourage good practice in the treatment of disabled people
- Necessary steps taken to stop the discrimination against disabled people
- Equal opportunities are promoted for disabled people
- The working of the Disability Rights Commission Act and Disability Discrimination Act should be kept under review
It is an independent body which is established in April 2000 and has set up various goals of a society where the disabled people can actively participate and treated as equal citizens. This Disability Commission effectively works with the service providers, employers and disabled people and finds practical solutions for each disabled person.
The Disability Rights Commission is a group which has administrative or managerial authority and:-
- Offers a conciliation service for disabled people and service providers including education providers
- Provides advice and information to education providers, disabled people and businesses
- Conducts research
- Helps the disabled people to secure their rights under the Disability Discrimination Act
- Advises the government to take active part in existing legislation and make necessary changes towards the development
- Develops statutory codes of practice
This Commission actively engages the disabled people to teach about their responsibilities and roles in society and how they should work effectively for the society and the government. They help the disabled people in conciliating and educating them. They also play an important role in supporting business to fulfill all their aims as mentioned in the Disability Discrimination Act. The main goals of Disability Rights Commission are:-
- To raise disability awareness
- To introduce the nation of citizenship
- To examine attitudes towards disabled people
- To explore what it means to be a citizen
This Commission fights against the equal rights for disabled people and help the disabled people with the various services including the advice and information about the challenging attitudes and supporting cases. The Disability Rights Commission has announced the first formal investigation for the disabled people and also has the ability to suspend and stop the conduct of a formal investigation and in taking this decision it requires the approval of Secretary of State. The Commission provides the screenreading devices to the blind people so that they can easily translate the text or can understand them.
